CloudFTP

I am sad I missed this Kickstarter product.  I think this item is going to be great.  Check it out.

Click HERE to goto the link on the Kickstarter page for CloudFTP.  There is a very detailed video included.

  1. So, how is this different than the cloud that's already out there?

  2. It's your own local cloud and isn't restricted to having a local wifi connection and is much faster. Also, any dealing with large files such as movies just isn't where it needs to be yet on the cloud. I could see it used to travel with large files such as movies. It probably wouldn't be as much for teaching as it would be for personal use (although I could see myself carrying a drive around with any educational videos I have and just plugging it in if I needed it for classes). I could envision you using CloudFTP with a thumb or hard drive loaded with movies. I have a 2TB drive designated for iTunes (I have been transferring my entire dvd library to iTunes to use on AppleTV) so I could essentially plug this drive into the CloudFTP on a road trip and have my entire video library at my disposal traveling anywhere (and more importantly not taking up room on the iPad). Then the girls or I could use our iPads to watch our own movies as we travel or in a hotel. I also could also see it being a really easy way to transfer flash drive files or camera pictures (on a camera) right to your iPad. I take pictures from a camera that is better quality than the ipad but transferring files to the iPad for blogging is a small pain. I have to plug the camera to my desktop and put the files in Dropbox and then open it up on the ipad in the app for Dropbox. You could cut a step out and not leave the couch if you just hook the camera up to the CloudFTP and access the pictures and drop them right on the iPad. My personal biggest use would be the movie thing.

  3. Good points. I made this movie with the iPad over xmas break, and am really not impressed with the quality of the video (only used iPad to film):

I can see how nice it would be to eliminate some of the steps. Transferring video is a huge pain both to and from the iPad. I need to talk to you about what you are doing with your movies and Apple TV - I have one now too, but only use it for Netflix and mirroring.
You should do a post on how you are using the Apple TV!! (nudge nudge)
